UBRI Work & Solutions

Technical assistance to help communities save energy, create jobs, and contribute to statewide energy and sustainability goals

UBRI is offering hands-on technical assistance to help communities navigate the NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities Program and complete High Impact Actions toward achieving designation. Our Technical Assistance comes in many forms based on the needs of the community and the identified actions they take. Examples of assistance include: identifying and assessing potential clean energy opportunities that fit community needs; developing materials and strategies for community campaigns; compiling, organizing, and analyzing data related to municipal energy use; and tailoring local laws and policies that make clean energy easier for businesses and homeowners. Our Clean Energy Communities technical assistance team can help identify what actions are achievable in the short term, and can help create a framework for long term sustainability planning.

To learn how your community can get involved with the Clean Energy Communities program, please contact the UBRI Clean Energy Communities coordinator Jason Kulaszewski at jasonkul@buffalo.edu or (716) 878-2441.

UBRI TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Helping WNY communities launch successful solarize campaigns with outreach materials and strategies

Since 2017 UBRI has provided hands on Technical Assistance through NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities program to help several communities throughout Western New York develop Solarize Campaigns. These short term campaigns allow communities to come together to work with a trusted solar installer that offers discounted rates on the installation of solar arrays.

UBRI TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Helping communities use data to reduce energy consumption

UBRI is committed to data-driven decisions. Through the Clean Energy Communities program, we help municipalities measure and track energy consumption at their buildings so they can identify energy and cost savings measures. From 2017 – 2019, we helped 10 municipalities adopt local resolutions to measure energy usage annually, and offered technical assistance to get that tracking up and running. Of the 190 municipal buildings across the region that get tracked, 17 facilities have undergone upgrades to improve efficiency and reduce wasteful energy consumption. These upgrades alone are estimated to eliminate 505.7 Metric Tons of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions annually.

SPREADING THE WORD TO OTHER COMMUNITIES

Sharing the story with other WNY communities to grow participation and advance sustainability in the region.

UBRI’s Clean Energy Communities Story Map chronicles the collective impact of the program in Erie and Niagara counties. Using ESRI’s Story Map platform, this interactive website maps what communities are participating, the “High Impact Actions” being completed, and the stories of how the program helps municipalities save energy costs and become more sustainable.
