About Buffalo Street Trees
Buffalo Street Trees is an initiative of the City of Buffalo Division of Parks and Recreation to inform and engage residents of the opportunities and benefits of bringing trees to their neighborhoods.
The program focuses on neighborhoods with limited tree canopy and works to give residents the information, tools, and support they need to request free street trees for their blocks.
Throughout the project, UB Regional Institute (UBRI)
is supporting the City of Buffalo with community outreach, engagement, and programming to help residents, neighborhood groups, and community organizations get involved. This includes helping develop and support the Buffalo Street Tree Ambassador program, which trains community members to serve as neighborhood-based messengers for the initiative. Tree Ambassadors help raise awareness about the benefits of street trees, share information about how residents can request trees, attend community events, canvass neighborhoods, and build relationships with civic groups and local stakeholders.
Through this work, UBRI and the City of Buffalo are helping connect residents to resources that can expand Buffalo’s street tree canopy in the neighborhoods that need it most. The BST program is funded by a grant from the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) Program and focuses on increasing tree canopy.
